Social Media & Dating Apps

Taking to social media to find a partner is nothing new—we’ve seen people use Facebook to find a date, and we’ve all heard the stories about people who met their partners on Instagram. And with dating apps like Tinder, Match, Bumble, and Plenty of Fish becoming increasingly popular as a way to connect with potential love interests, it’s only natural that couples are now turning to these platforms for their first encounters.

But some people are still wary of the idea of reaching out on social media, whether they’re receiving or initiating messages. It could be seen as too forward, especially when the two people aren’t already friends. Or it could seem a little desperate. Luckily, new research shows that not everyone has a problem with this form of communication: 81 percent of dating app users would consider going out with someone who DM’d them on social media.

With such an overwhelming majority of singles saying they’d be open to this kind of courtship, why not give it a try? Just make sure you’re being respectful; don’t be creepy or pushy in your messages or comments. You may get blocked for life if you don’t play your cards right!

Social media has become a way to meet people that normal offline avenues would not normally allow. For example, someone who lives in another state or country that you are only aware of through mutual friends could be invited into your life through social media. Social media also allows for the possibility of meeting people that you might not have otherwise met, such as those with different backgrounds or lifestyles. Many people like this because it allows them to find people with common interests and common goals.

However, social media is not always an optimal environment to meet the love of your life. The reason for this is because the dating process is often very difficult and takes time. By meeting someone online, you may find that they do not meet all of your criteria and therefore they are not the right person for you. It is important to remember that no one is perfect and there will never be a perfect match for everyone. When using social media to try and find a soul mate, it is important to remember that you must still keep your options open and look for people who share similar values and interests as yourself.

So before you turn to social media for romantic purposes, you may want to take these precautions:

  • Do some research about the person you’re talking to! Check their social media profiles and see what you can learn about them!
  • Be extremely cautious when talking in an online setting, especially when there is sexual communication.
  • Ensure you speak with them on the phone before actually meeting up with them in person!
